THE AL-JAZEERA FRONT IN THE WAR OF INDEPENDENCE: ORGANIZATION PROCESS, ACTIVITIES AND EFFECTIVENESS

Levent ÜNAL

On the Eastern Front the Armenian forces and gangs, on the Western Front the Greek Army, on the Southern Front French Forces and Armenian gangs and, on the Al-Jazeera Front the British and French forces and the Arab and Kurdish tribes that cooperated with them were fought.

Of these four fronts, the Al-Jazeera Front was the one that lasted the longest and had the most different quality.

Among the fronts of the War of Independence, the least research was done on the El Jazeera Front due to limited resources, and the fewest publications were published on this front. In addition, since the Al-Jazeera Front was generally identified with the Revandiz Operation, research mostly focused on the Mosul Issue. However, apart from Mosul, the Al-Jazeera Front also has a section in the Southeastern Anatolia Region from the Euphrates River to the Iranian Border in Anatolia, and in the south of Anatolia between Aleppo and the Euphrates River. The activities of the Front Command took place in these three regions and of different nature.

The purpose of this article is to evaluate the activities and effectiveness of the Front Command by examining the reasons and developments that necessitated the formation of the Eljazire Front. It is considered that the article will be useful in explaining the activities carried out by the Front Command with different strategies in different regions and evaluating the front as a whole. Literature review method and qualitative research model were used for the study.

Key Words: Al-Jazeera Front, Nihad (Anılmış) Pasha, Ali Şefik Özdemir, Mosul Issue, Revandiz Operation.
