A WOMAN TORSO FROM KREMNA

Abdulhadi DURUKAN

Located in Burdur Province, Bucak District near Çamlık Village, Kremna is one of the important cities of the Pisidia region. In this study, a female torso discovered during the researches carried out in and around Cremna between 2013-2019 was introduced. Torso was found outside the southern walls of the city, in the pile of stones used for the field border. For this reason, no suggestion could be made as to which structure it might have been in. The head of the torso and the lower part of the waist are broken and missing; also small for normal human size. It has been documented that the sculptures unearthed during the previous studies in the city's Q building (Bath / Library) have high quality craftsmanship. In this respect, the torso is important for the sculpture inventory of the city. It has been revealed that it is another similar example of the sculptures previously found in Cremna, with its marble quality, processing features and the fold structure seen on the dress. In addition, it is striking that the torso, which is the subject of the study, is similar to the Muse statues brought from Kremna, which were smuggled abroad and are exhibited in the J. Paul Getty Museum today, in terms of material quantity, body dimensions, and processing features. From this point of view, it was thought that the work could be one of the Muse sculptures. On the other hand, the lack of clear details in the work makes it difficult to comment on which muse it might belong to. Depending on the stylistic similarities and periodical features of torso with muse sculptures, it has been concluded that it belongs to the 200s AD. It can be assumed that with the discovery of the torso, which is the subject of the study, other examples of Muse statues can be found during the excavations which will be conducted in the city.
