MOTIFS PREVALENT IN TURKISH FOLK MUSIC TUNES AND FUNCTIONS

Metin EKEN

Our traditional Turkish Folk Music emerged as common people expressed their emotions and ideas about a number of events they experience within their lifetime from birth to death (love, death, homesickness, war, separation, murder, joy, sorrow etc.) impromptu with several tunes. The most distinguishing aspect of verbal and non-verbal tunes in Turkish Folk Music is that they are anonymous and performed with an authentic playing method according to the characteristics of the locality. In that respect, the motifs of local tunes have a number of specific characteristics. The motifs which are endowed with the rhythmical qualities of the melodic structure of tunes express the locality and type of the tune in line with the modal structure and tempo.
