In this study, what kind of changes/transformations the main characters in "Oblomov" by İvan Aleksandroviç Gonçarov, and "Tutunamayanlar" by Oğuz Atay undergo due to alienation is analyzed. Some factors responsible for alienation are focused upon, and the theme of identity search is traced in the lives of Russian and Turkish middle class characters in a comparative methodology. As a result of the study, the identity search of a Turkish intellectual (1950) and a Russian lord (1850) as well as the social entities hindering their individuation processes are analyzed as factors responsible for their alienation, in the context of two different literary works produced in different societies and periods through humour and irony.
