CHILDREN'S PUBLICATIONS IN TERMS OF THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROCESSES OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT (AN EXAMPLE OF THE RELIGIOUS VALUES SERIES)

Emre YILMAZ

As a literary product, children's magazines hold a significant place and function in terms of influencing children's mental, social, emotional, moral, and religious development. In today’s technological world, there is a need for high-quality and professionally prepared literary works that can attract the attention of children and, in terms of content, aim to instill universal moral values, national and spiritual values, and help children grow into useful individuals for society. This research is a descriptive field study aimed at examining whether the "Religious Values" book series, published by the Directorate of Religious Affairs and aimed at children aged 7-15, is sufficient in terms of content and features to appeal to its target audience and contribute to their moral development. Additionally, the study evaluates the functionality of this series in guiding children's moral development to a higher stage (transitioning children aged 7-12 to the traditional stage and children aged 12-15 to the post-traditional stage). The study employed document review, descriptive analysis, and content analysis techniques, commonly used in qualitative research. The results indicate that the series is competent in terms of content and features to attract the attention of its target audience and positively contribute to their moral development. It also suggests that the series could serve as a valuable resource for guiding children's moral development to a higher level. However, it is recommended that the series be revised to create separate content for children aged 7-12 and 12-15 for more effective educational outcomes.
