Bir toplumun dil kıvraklığını, hazır cevaplılığını anlatan önemli kelime ve kelime grupları olan söz varlığı; halkın yaşayışını, kültürel, maddi ve manevi değerlerini içinde barındırır.Buradan hareketle toplumlar hakkında bilgi edinmenin bir yolu da kullandıkları dilin söz varlığını incelemekten geçer; çünkü bireyler, kullandıkları sözcüklerde kültürleri ve hayata bakış açıları hakkında önemli ipuçları verirler.Bir yazarın eserinde kullandığı dil, hem yazarı hem de toplumu temsil eder. Yazarın incelenen romanında söz varlığı unsurları tespit edilip bu unsurların kitaptaki kullanım sıklığı belirlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Toplumcu gerçekçilik akımından etkilenen Orhan Kemal’in eserlerinde söz varlığına dair unsurların çoğunu sıkça kullandığı tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olan doküman incelemesi tekniği ile yürütülmüştür.Çalışma sonunda eserin ikilemeler, deyimler, kalıp sözler, halk ağzında bulunan sözcükler, Osmanlı Türkçesine ait sözcükler bakımından zengin olduğu; atasözleri, argo ve terimler bakımından ise çok zengin olmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Yazarın; eserde kalıp sözler başlığı altında dinî unsurlardan yararlandığı da görülmüştür.
