Mondros Mütarekesi'nden hemen sonra harekete geçen ve Megalo Idea hedefleri doğrultusunda Akdeniz'den Karadeniz'e uzanan coğrafyayı ele geçirmek isteyen Yunanistan Başbakanı Venizelos, Itilaf devletleri nezdinde yaptığı girişimlerde özellikle Batı Anadolu üzerinde durmuş, hatta Pontusçu Rumların tepkisini çekme pahasına Trabzon ve çevresinin Ermeni iddiaları çerçevesinde ele alınması gerektiğini ifade etmişti. Esasında Venizelos'un dikkatini Batı Anadolu üzerine vermesi Doğu Karadeniz dahil Megalo Idea'nın diğer hedeflerinden vazgeçtiği anlamına gelmiyordu. Nitekim Venizelos, bir taraftan Karadeniz Bölgesi'ndeki Rum sayısını artırmaya çalışırken, diğer taraftan da Ermenilerle birlikte bir “Pontus Devleti” kurulması için askerî ve siyasî girişimlerde bulunmaktaydı. O'nun planına göre Rumlar ve Ermeniler ortak bir askeri operasyonla Doğu Karadeniz'de kontrolü ele geçirecekler, daha sonra da bir Rum- Ermeni Cumhuriyeti oluşturacaklardı. The Greek Prime Minister Venizelos who took action immediately after the Mondros Armistice and wanted to get the region extendingfrom the Mediterrenean to the Black Sea in accordance with the targets of the Megalo Idea;especially emphasized on Western Anatolia in his attempts before the Entente States.Also,he declared that Trabzon and its surroundings should be handled in the framework of Armenian claims at the expense of Pontus. Venizelos's attention on the Western Anatolia especially did not mean that he gave up his other targets of Megalo Idea including the Eastern Black Sea. In fact on the one hand,Venizelos tried to increase the numbers of Greek on the Black Sea Region.On the other hand,he made military and political attempts for establishing a State of Pontus together wıth Armenians.According to his plan;Greeks and Armenians would get the control in the Eastern Black Sea with a collective military operation.And then;they would form a Greek- Armenian Republic.This would be an important step to the ' State of Pontus'
