A SYMBOLIC CHARACTER IN LITERARY WORKS TITLED “THE KNIGHT IN TIGER GUISE” AND “THE LIFE OF GRIGOL KHANTSTELI”

In this study, “the bright column” symbol in the works titled “the Knight in Tiger Guise” and “the Life of Grigol Khntsteli” is analyzed. In “the Life of Grigol Khntsteli” written by Giorgi Merçule, the “bright column / pillar” symbolizes God. Grigior Khansteli is depicted as the servant of God. His spritual clarity and usefulness are represented by the “bright pillar” erected upon his head. He serves God, yet is not a “bright pillar” or representative of belief. As for Şota Rustaveli’s “the Knight in Tiger Guise”, a heroic character named Avtandil is depicted as the symbol of “bright pillar” and he is said to be a man with “a formidable appearance, tall and resembles the sun and the moon”. The character in this work of art is also analyzed. Belief, “the bright pillar” and servant all get mixed and turn into Avtandil. Besides, “Avtandil” holds both antique and Christian principles in himself. In this type of epic, Avtandil stands for belief.
