THE THEME OF CITY IN THE POETRY OF BRYUSOV, BLOK AND MAYAKOVSKY

 KEVSER TETİK

From the past to present, the theme of city has been discussed in almost every genre of literature. While the author of prose describes the city in an epical language, this language gives its way to lyric expression in poetry. The common trait of poets, who treat this subject is that they feel both fear and admiration towards to city. The city is something that the poet wants to destroy on the one hand, and he springs to life on the other. City theme in Russian literature begins with Alexander Pushkin and Fyodor Dostoyevsky together with Realism Movement in the 19th century and is continued by Nikolai Gogol and Mikhail Bulgakov. As for the poetry, starting with Nikolai Nekrasov, city theme creates identity with Valery Bryusov, Alexander Blok and Vladimir Mayakovsky. The aim of the assesment is to give information about how the famous Silver Age poets approach the city in their poems. Especially I hope this research would be helpful due to the lack of researches performed in our country. The theme is revealed with quoting from the best intensed quatrains and verses of the city theme by the respective poets.
