DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SARIKAMIŞ

Sarikamis is a district centre, which is situated on Erzurum-Kars highway and connected to Kars province. In this article, demographic progress of Sarikamis district during the period starting from 1927 until 2009 was examined. The total population, which was 35.336 in 1927, increased up to 79.779 in 1955 and decreased to 49.413 in 2009. When the population of Sarikamis is analyzed in terms of the composition of gender and age, male population has been more in all census periods in the district centre due to it being a military settlement. According to the 2009 data, 35% of the population consisted of children, 59% of the population comprised adults and 6% consisted of elderly. The urban population, which was 24% in 1940, was 36% in 2009. A decrease both in the rural population and the urban population is the case.
